Then … September the 22nd, actually dawned. The sun got up, the clouds vanished, flags were unfurled and the fun began. [1]
Today is the birthday of not one, but two hobbits of renown – Bilbo and Frodo Baggins.
It is not surprising that The Lord of the Rings opens on ‘A Long-Expected Party’. As well as effectively introducing half of the novel’s key characters and establishing the relationships between them, it demonstrates the heart of the Shire and its inhabitants. This serves as motivation for Frodo in undertaking his quest, whilst highlighting the magnitude of his sacrifice.
‘I should like to save the Shire, if I could. … I feel that as long as the Shire lies behind, safe and comfortable, I shall find wandering more bearable: I shall know that somewhere there is a firm foothold, even if my feet cannot stand there again.’ [2]
I would like to celebrate these characters and this occasion in true hobbit fashion, by giving away some presents.
Hobbits give presents to other people on their own birthdays. Not very expensive ones, as a rule, and not so lavishly as on this occasion; but it was not a bad system. [3]
Update: This party has ended, sorry. Keep your eyes peeled for next year’s invitation!
I have eight Lord of the Rings movie tie-in bookmarks (by the Australian Bookmark Company) to give away:
Simply be one of the first eight people to comment on this post with a “Happy Birthday”, and I will be in touch to garner your postal address. The first party guest gets first choice of bookmark, so be quick to secure your favourite!
You may wish to celebrate today with other time-honoured hobbit traditions, namely, the consumption of good food and favourite beverages, preferably in congenial company!
Cheers!
